At the 8th Annual MSS Manager’s Picnic Timmy Kelly, a 14-year old exceptional child sang the Star Spangled Banner. Timmy told us at the picnic that he is a huge fan of KYW Newsradio of Philadelphia. He stated he has a great interest and “hobby” in news radio and that he likes to do “mock” radio broadcasts himself from his home bedroom. (Timmy was listening intently to a hand-held radio during the picnic—he was keeping current on the KYW (broadcast of the day!)
Timmy asked if MSS could somehow help him obtain background sounds used by KYW during their radio broadcasts. When we looked into it for him, we found KYW most willing and eager to have Timmy visit their studio. So on September 14th, Timmy and his father did just that:
- They received a building / studio tour
- Sat in on a pre-news planning session among production people and anchors
- Timmy was allowed access to the studio room during an actual broadcast
- Timmy was set up to record his own “personal news broadcast”
- Timmy received the background sounds on CD used by KYW
- Timmy met the anchors—all of the names of whom he knew and he was most excited to meet them in person.
Timmy's father placed a phone call recently to thank MSS for our efforts in coordinating the visit between KYW and Timmy. Tim Kelly Sr. could not say enough about MSS efforts in this regard. Timmy gave us a great gift by singing at our picnic. Tim Kelly Senior said, MSS “returned the favor” by giving Timmy a gift of our own.
